NEEMA – Afro Celtic Adventures

Raphaël Pinel is walking outside well known paths with his new album NEEMA (meaning “Grace” in Swahili) on which his Celtic harp is as much inspired by Breton airs or Irish ballads as by sonorities that evoke the African kora or imaginary spheres, and married with other instruments played by himself (tin-whistle, percussions, concertina, electronic looper) it creates spaces of a big sensitivity. He lets us travel with his beautiful melodies and colourful rhythms and his great freedom in his improvisations.

Raphaël Pinel has been affirming himself on international stages: Hürther Jazznacht Festival, Easter Impro Festival in Göttingen or Harfentreffen 2012 in Germany, Rencontres Internationales de Harpe Celtique in Dinan (2015 and 2018) as well as in tours in Canada, Finland, South Korea, India, Australia among others.
He won the Price of the Jury in the international harp competition “A Bird came Flying” in 2012 and won the First Price of Improvisation at the Kan Ar Bobl international Celtic harp competition in 1994.

Presentation

Raphaël Pinel is a creative and intuitive harp player and composer from Cherbourg, Normandy, now living in Tampere, Finland.

His main instruments are the Celtic harp that he’s been playing since 1990 and the innovative 6×6 cross-strung whole tones chromatic harp, a very rare instrument with 2 rows of strings that allows him to explore new musical avenues on the harp. In 2015 he also starts to play the electric pedal harp. He also includes ethnic flutes, tin-whistle, concertina, drums, bodhran, keyboards and electronics and live looping in his performances, dance events and recordings.

His music is fresh from the heart and combines powerful simple melodies, jazz harmonies and groovy Latin-world or asymmetric rhythms.

Raphaël Pinel is playing in solo concerts, in duo with the fantastic bass player Eric Ragu or with his trio Phoebuzz (harp & electronic machines, trumpet, percussions). He also plays for events, openings, vernissages, weddings, or in studio, creating beautiful atmospheres.

Being raised in Normandy, he studied music in Rennes, then stayed 3 years in Montreal, 10 years in Cologne, Germany, 7 years in Provence and settled in 2018 in Tampere, Finland, where he is also working as a web developer.

NEEMA – Aventures celtiques et africaines

Raphaël Pinel sort des sentiers battus avec son nouvel album NEEMA (la « Grâce » en Swahili) sur lequel sa harpe celtique s’inspire aussi bien d’airs bretons et ballades irlandaises que de sonorités évoquant la kora africaine ou des sphères imaginaires, et se marie avec d’autres instruments joués par lui-même (tin-whistle, percussions, concertina, looper électronique) pour créer des espaces d’une grande sensibilité. Il nous fait voyager par ses mélodies de toute beauté sur des rythmes colorés et des improvisations d’une grande liberté.
Raphaël Pinel s’est affirmé sur des scènes internationales :  Festival de jazz Hürther Jazznacht, festival d’improvisation Easter Impro à Göttingen ou Harfentreffen 2012 en Allemagne, Rencontres internationales de harpe celtique de Dinan (2015 et 2018), ainsi que des tournées au Canada, en Finlande, Corée, Inde, Australie, entre autres.
Il remporte le Prix du Jury au concours international « A Bird Came flying » en 2012 ainsi que le 1er prix d’improvisation au concours Kan Ar Bobl 1994.

Présentation

Raphaël Pinel crée à la harpe une musique actuelle et innovatrice. Ses compositions originales, enrichies par une improvisation spontanée en complicité avec le public, nous amènent dans des voyages imaginaires, nous laissant découvrir des univers parfois très méditatifs et spacieux, parfois inspirés de rythmes latins ou orientaux sur lesquels dansent des mélodies d’ailleurs sur des touches jazzy.

Son instrument principal est la harpe celtique, qu’il joue avec une grande liberté depuis 1990, la harpe chromatique à double rangée de tons entiers, un instrument très rare avec lequel il explore de nouveaux univers, auxquelles s’ajoutent la harpe de concert électrique à pédales ainsi que les flûtes ethniques, le tin-whistle, le concertina, les percussions, le bodhran, claviers, machines électroniques et de looping, que ce soit en concert, dans des stages de Danse Energie Célébration ou en studio.

Après une enfance à Cherbourg en Normandie et ses études de musique à Rennes, il a habité 3 ans au Québec, 10 ans autour de Cologne en Allemagne, 7 ans en Provence, et il s’est établi depuis 2018 à Tampere en Finlande où il travaille également comme développeur web.
